(Sydney, Australia) - Loop Wireless today announced the appointment of Martin Hoffman as CEO and Managing Director in the lead-up to its proposed IPO on the ASX early in 2007.

Mr Hoffman was CEO of Ninemsn from 2003 to July 2006. In this role he consolidated its position as Australia’s leading new media company, while also rapidly growing revenue and profit. Mr Hoffman has a strong background in Australia’s new media industry. He previously held senior roles at Fairfax Business Magazines and Fairfax Digital between 1999 and 2002, including starting and building the online auction business SOLD.com.au before its sale to Yahoo! in early 2001 for $24m cash.

Loop Wireless is a leading global provider of social networking services on 3G mobile networks. Mr Hoffman said he was attracted to the role by the innovation and international potential of Loop Wireless. “I am tremendously excited by the challenge to build a global service based on Australian technology and smarts. Loop Wireless is a wholly owned subsidiary of AdultShop.com Ltd. On 13 December, AdultShop announced to the ASX its intention to spin-off Loop, subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals. Loop will be seeking to raise up to $5m.

Loop Wireless founder and Director of Technology and Product, Mr Ian Rodwell, welcomed Mr Hoffman’s leadership in preparation for the potential IPO. “The whole Loop team is thrilled to have Martin join us. His experience and achievements in new media, including at Ninemsn will give us a huge boost,” said Mr Rodwell.

Martin Hoffman was CEO of Ninemsn from January 2003 until July 2006. Ninemsn is a 50:50 joint-venture between PBL Media and Microsoft, and is Australia’s leading internet content and services business. Innovate: Sqware Peg's Measure of Marketing Wins

SQWARE PEG WAS FOUNDED in 2003 by Shawn Stilwell. In June this year, his company acquired a marketing and public relations firm, MarketingFX, whose principal consultant is William Scully-Power.

Stilwell was the first developer to build a text-messaging application for Salesforce.com’s third-party development platform, AppExchange. The SMS application has a number of important companies using its products.

Vodafone, NRMA and Commonwealth Bank are marquee clients of agency On-Demand.

For Sqware Peg, being the most experienced partner for Salesforce.com in the Asia-Pacific region has its advantages, especially when Salesforce.com announced its l000th customer in the region. Stilwell expects good growth as users become more familiar with its functions.

“Most customers are yet to derive all the value they can from the platform,” he says. Stilwell believes he can take the business model to any platform based on internet standards. “If it’s a web service, we can deliver our subscription. Our technology is based on common standards-based protocols — for us to migrate from Saleseforce.com to Microsoft or any other platform is not hard.”

Mashups make services flow

GARTNER Research vice-president Nick Gall says terms and ideas such as mashups and wikis sound new-fangled, but the basic drivers of Web 2.0 have been around since the mid-1990s, and they are relevant to any organisation."There isn't much in the way of new technology here, it's just a deeper appreciation, a deeper understanding, of how web technologies can be put to new uses," Gall told last week's Gartner Symposium ITxpo in Sydney.

Gall describes Web 2.0 as the online equivalent of the open source movement and says its successes lie in the use of simple processes that can be read and reused by many organisations.

He points to major companies, including Amazon and Salesforce.com as businesses that have tapped into the movement to build web services that can be used by any organisation, from a micro-business to a major corporation.

"One thing we like to focus on is not just the coding standards and interface standards and so on, but some of the architectural principles underlying them -- the core web architectural principles that are really driving the way a lot of the Web 2.0 sites are structured," Gall says. "To give it a name, we call it web-oriented architecture.

"The basic idea here is that it's a form of service-oriented architecture that's more lightweight than a traditional enterprise SOA," he says.

One of the keys to making web services more accessible is using web addresses (URLs) and URIs (uniform resource identifiers) to identify data.

Many organisations have begun using standards such as XML, but so many are still relying on proprietary identifiers, which make it impossible to hook into their web services without first learning what the identifiers mean, Gall says.

"What makes something reusable is that it's generic."

Companies are also using too many verbs to define actions, such "get customer", "get product", "create product" and "add line item", he says.

Instead, they should rely on the basic descriptors of "get", "update", "create", "add" and "delete" and let URLs and URIs embedded in the web service decide on the specific action.

Gall says Salesforce.com's AppExchange project is a shining example of how Web 2.0 principles could simplify the transmission of web services and make applications more interoperable. AppExchange hosts about 400 third-party applications that can be download and plugged into Saleforce.com's customer relationship management system.

"Salesforce.com only uses 17 verbs, 17 operations for every business activity on its site," Gall says. "Compare that with where you're going with your web service definitions.

"If they can do all of the business functionality that's available through third parties and through Salesforce with only 17 verbs, why do some of us have 170 verbs, or 200, or 400."
